The best ever Istria food tour with Gareth from Travel Deeper
In mid June Nikola and me took world famous travel YouTuber Gareth Leonard on quite extraordinary food tour showcasing the best and most authentic produce of Istrian terroir. Gareth’s video that follows is a wonderful, dynamic and really fun dive into that wonderful day where us at EatIstria tried to showcase what is usually under the radar for mainstream tourists. Gareth is a real pro in describing the food he tastes (he immediately got crazy for divine Istrian olive oil!), very passionate but not pretentious, a bit like Bourdain.
In the morning, we first went for truffle hunt with dogs organized by the truffle hunter family Kotiga in Motovun (Miro tartufi) followed by a hearty truffle based brunch prepared by our lovely host Mirjana Kotiga. Then we visited Aleš Winkler from Kumparička organic goat farm where even our very own Nikola, who absolutely hates goat milk produce, enjoyed Aleš’s 4-years-old aged cheese. We finished the day at Konoba Doma in Sv. Petar u Šumi that exemplifies what a farm-to-table tavern should be – they grow cereals that feed their own pigs from which they make air cured pork charcuterie (prosciutto – pršut, sausage – kobasice, air dried tenderlion – ombolo…) and finally, all this wonderful produce ends in Konoba Doma’s kitchen and our plates.
