Where vineyards oversee the sea
Until ten years ago, the very tip of the Istrian peninsula wasn’t considered a serious winemaking region. Due to the influence of the sea currents, coastal winds and the fact of being surrounded by the sea from east, south and west, the microclimate here is more similar to one on a Dalmatian island than to the climate in the rest of Istria. Young winemakers with innovative approach used this hot and dry Mediterranean microclimate to give traditional Istrian varieties an original twist. And so a new style of Istrian wines was born.
This tour will take you to perhaps the most vibrant winemaking subregion of Istria; the centerpiece of the tour is a visit to the winery of the enfant terrible of Istrian wines, who was the first to prove the worth of this region. You will have an opportunity to taste the so-called vin de rosa, a nearly extinct desert wine traditionally produced by well-off families in the Istrian town of Vodnjan. Even though excellent wines are a novelty here, high quality olive oil has been produced since Roman times, so expect to be treated to a selection of oils as well. We will visit three wineries altogether and have lunch either in one of the wineries or in traditional Istrian tavern. If you wish, the lunch may be substituted by a gourmet picnic in a vineyard by the sea, prepared by Goran himself.
